Google Sites: faster solutions to resolve business problems – part 2

Google Sites: faster solutions to resolve business problems – part 2

Google Sites is an ideal tool to resolve (urgent) communication needs within a company. In this second part we will actually make our site.

In my first blog post I already mentioned the reasons why we wanted to set up a Google Site. Romneya wants to hire a number of specialized people. By communicating our needs in a playful manner we hope to convince Millenials that Romneya is an interesting and fun place to work.

Ok, but where and how do we start?

If your Google Apps administrator has activated Google Sites it is fairly easy to get started. In our case ,we did not bother to look for a special theme. Our idea is pretty simple: it needs to look like a ‘wanted’ poster. How the look and feel will be is something to worry about later.

Under ‘More Options’ we need to change some settings in order to make that our site is visible publicly.

Also, we want to add some useful key words for SEO. And we want to add an appropriate label to find our site later on in our Google Apps domain between all our other created Google Sites. As we also want to visualize our visitors with Google Analytics, we will also add the appropriate Analytics code.

With the help of our friendly DNS adminstrator we also want to map the web address of our Google Site to something more easy to remember.

The hard to remember address ‘http://sites.google.com/a/romneya.com/wanted‘ is now also available as ‘http://cloudiocoder.romneya.com‘. In order to achieve this, our DNS-administrator needs to setup a CNAME record that refers ‘cloudiocoder‘ within our domain to ‘ghs.google.com‘.

In only a few steps we are ready for our next challenge: designing our site. More on that subject in our upcoming article.
