Desktop notifications for Gmail and chat

Unless you are very disciplined and only open your mail at certain times of the days to avoid disturbances, mostly likely you will want to have notifications of new mail or chat. If you use Gmail with a browser, you need to use external applications to do so: the Google Talk client, Gmail Notifr or Gmail Growl.

Chrome users can now enable HTML5 desktop notifications for new mail and chat. But you have to activate the feature in Gmail!

Google buys Global IP Solutions: new conferencing functionalities soon?

Yesterday Google announced its intentions to acquire Norwegian Global IP Solutions.

Global IP Solutions is an important player in the real-time voice and video processing software for IP networks. Their customers include IBM, Yahoo, Citrix but also Baidu from China and Mail.ru (Russia)

Collaboration with Google Talk and Mail, a new Tower of Babel

Working on project with co-workers or clients that speak other languages is not a sinecure. Last time I checked, we have come a long way from the situation described in Genesis 11:1-9 “…And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech…”. Yes, I know, English is the preferred business language. Unfortunately not everybody speaks or writes it well (enough).
